Nail Polish Stained My Nails How To Fix Them For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • Update: My nails are no longer stained, check the bottom of the post to find out how I fixed them.

This post has turned into something of a experiment - how to get rid of those awful, embarrassing nail stains. First though, I'm going to show you what nail polish I used and give a little background about my nail's health.

I started nail art at the end of April 2012 and made this blog, Nailed it NZ, in early May. To be honest, at the time I didn't even know that nail blogs existed, let alone know that they're a massive thing. My friend over at A girl with some clothes has a blog with fashion and a bit of nail art too, but honestly I had no idea how big the world was that I was entering. I also didn't know that base coats existed! Which, with me painting my nails almost every day led to me quickly getting yellow-stained fingernails. Gross! Ever since then (June 2012), I've used at least one layer of base coat, and I've been patiently waiting for my previous mistakes - the yellowness - to grow out. Here's a shot of them at this stage.

But then THIS happened. Introducing "Lilac Hearts" By Jordana.

Pretty, right? I spent a long, long time trying to get the hearts out of the bottle, but I thought the final result was just adorable. That's Jordana's "Lavender Fields" in the background by the way - "Lilac Hearts" is clear, which made it even weirder when it killed my pretty fingers. I know it wasn't "Lavender Fields" that did it, because I use that polish all the time and it's never done anything.

I did these nails yesterday, and today (typical me) I got bored in class and started peeling them off. To discover...
THIS!! They're RED! So far this seems like a permanent stain. I'm expecting they'll fade to yellow but I could be wrong - I've never experienced something like this ever before with my nail polish. Yellow, yes, red, no. And yes, I'll admit that they're in pretty average condition, especially the pinky and ring finger. I'm still trying to train myself not to scratch my nail polish off - it can take off layers of keratin as well and damage you nail, which is what has happened here.

How did it happen? My one and only plausible theory is that it was because there were so many coats of "Lilac Hearts." As I said before, it wasn't easy to get every heart out of the bottle, and I did so many coats just putting them on. I think it was the hearts themselves that caused a lot of damage. If you look at my middle finger you'll notice the staining is in patches, almost dots... almost hearts. And if you compare this to the other photo with the polish on the hearts and splotches look to be in the same spot. I've noticed it's the same with rhinestones and the like, too.

The next two photos are after the staining, and after I'd attacked my nails with a bunch of mostly useless treatments. After Uni finished I sat down and tried my best to get rid of/dull down the stains for over an hour. They look a bit nicer now but the colour hasn't really changed much.

But I'm working on it. Today I used a bunch of lotions and tried a bunch of ideas I found on the internet to tone down the staining. I also buffed them, cut off some hangnails, and filed them.

I will post updates as I learn more about nail staining!

It's been five months and my nails look quite different. These are what my nails look like now (well, actually a month ago) - still a bit stained but a lot lighter than any of the above pictures. They're basically how they were before the "big" stain. My plan at this stage is to see if it grows out.

I worked a lot in 2013, which left little time during the weekdays to paint my nails. I got in the habit of painting my nails in the weekend, then once they started coming off mid-week I'd remove them and leave them bare for the last few days of the week. There have been times when I have had them bare for extended periods of time; a couple of weeks was my longest "stint." And one day I looked at my nails and realised that my stains had disappeared. Completely.

This IS the "miracle cure" everyone wants. Sure, stains will fade, stains will grow out a little, but unless you give your nails a break fairly regularly they will not go away altogether. Here are my nails now

Long, strong, healthy and unstained. This is just from giving them a few days break after removing polish, and of course, wearing a base coat. I do give them a longer break if they've gotten really stained from the last polish I wore, however.

So, if you have stained nails and want them to go away, just give them a break once in a while! It may seem slow, but take a picture before and after and you'll see the difference. I know that when you've got badly stained nails the last thing you want to do is to let everyone see them, but if you want them unstained it's theonly way I've found that is guaranteed to work (and not damage your nails and/or wallet in the process).

    Things I have learnt:
    • Stained nails are not unhealthy nails. It's just a colour.
    • Whitening gels and the like don't work, at least not enough make it worth buying them.
    • Lemon juice, baking soda & whitening toothpaste don't work for old, set-in stains. I actually haven't found they work for any stains, but others claim they do so feel free to give it a try.
    • Some people have had success with Hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda. I can't support this as I never tried it (and it sounds a bit harsh on your skin!) but it could work - please let me know in the comments if you try it.
    • Always wear a base coat.
    • Throw out polishes that stain your nails. Google polish names to find out if they've stained other people's nails before you buy them; you're much less likely to waste your money then.
    • The nail polishes that are more likely to stain your nails are dark, deep colours like red, purple and green. Glitter & rhinestones may also leave a little stain underneath where they were. I haven't quite figured out why yet!
    • The only nail/hand care products I believe in are cuticle oil and moisturizer. Cuticle oil is amazing, and a must if you paint your nails a lot. You should apply cuticle oil as often as you use nail polish remover, as it's nail polish remover that makes your nails dry, not the polish. Moisturizer is just good for keeping your hands nice :).
    • Water is bad for your nails. It gets into them, makes them feel healthy for a little while but when it dries out it leaves them in a worse condition. Of course, you don't need to be too pedantic about avoiding water, but don't go around soaking your nails in water regularly.
    • Your nails are dead. Dead dead dead. Which means that they can't magically be fixed by the latest nail care fad that's advertised in store. What you can do is look after them so that as they grow, they'll grow healthy and strong.

Nails Perfect 10 Tips For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • 1. Never push back dry cuticles.
Doing so can crack polish at the base, which leads to chipping, says New York City celebrity nail pro Deborah Lippmann, who offers tips like this in her master class, held at upscale department stores. But if you're about to change your polish, you don't want any cuticle skin on the nail's surface (it can interfere with your base coat) — so loosen ragged edges by rubbing in a softening cream. Then gently nudge cuticles back with an orangewood stick.

    2. Don't soak fingertips.
There's no real reason to do so (at salons, it's just part of the pampering), and, says Tom Bachick, executive vice president of the Young Nails Company, it can actually have a negative effect: When you soak your nails, they absorb water, which temporarily puffs them up — but they revert to their normal shape when the water evaporates. This expansion and contraction is the top cause of chipping, peeling, and cracking of polish, says Bachick
    3. Get the surface clean, clean, clean.
Any traces of moisture, dust, or leftover enamel will get in the way of new-polish adhesion. To pave the way for true staying power, drizzle an old toothbrush with hand soap; then use it to "get into the corners and under nail tips, where oil — the great enemy — may be hiding," suggests Jan Arnold, cofounder of Creative Nail Design. (Steer clear of lanolin-based soaps, which interfere with adhesion.) Then swipe on an acetone polish remover to temporarily dehydrate the nail plate.
    4. Shape up.
"To maximize nail strength, tips should be rounded and corners left somewhat square," says Robyn Gmyrek, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University, in New York City. Filing is healthier than clipping, which can crack the nail plate. Use a fine-grit nail file and work in one direction. "Filing back and forth with an abrasive board will cause the nail's delicate keratin layers to peel away from each other," says Elsbeth Schuetz, international educator for Orly.
    5. Apply a base coat (no, it's not just a marketing ploy)
Not only does a bottom layer give lacquer something to latch on to, says chemist Doug Schoon, vice president of research and development for Creative Nail Design, but studies show that a base coat sticks to nails better than polish does. For uneven nail surfaces, choose a base that also smooths out roughness.
    6. Once lacquer is on, seal it with a slow-setting topcoat.
Quick-dry kinds are certainly appealing, but they evaporate so fast, they leave polish soft, mushy, and prone to denting. A slower-acting topcoat leaves a harder, more protective finish. To speed things up without sacrificing protection, use a drying oil or spray over your topcoat.
    7. Make the most of metallics.
Sure, light shades make chips less noticeable, but you can get an extra couple of days' wear from a metallic polish, says Schoon. One theory on why this works: Small iridescent flecks thicken enamel, so it forms a stronger film as it dries — allowing it to outlast creamy opaques (whose high pigment content can block adhesion).
    8. Polish should be applied in three narrow, even strokes —
one down the center and one down each side — and then be allowed to dry for two minutes before a second coat is applied. The thicker the layer is, the more difficult it is for the solvent — the liquid agent in enamel — to evaporate, boosting the chances that polish will peel.
    9. Practice good maintenance.
"Everything you touch wears away your polish," says Lippmann. Every other day, apply a layer of quick-dry topcoat (it's OK to use on already-dry polish) to form a protective shield and increase shine.
    10. Give your polish a drink.
The more your enamel dries out, the greater the likelihood that it will separate from your nail. Since topcoats don't seal in hydration, apply oil to nails and cuticles before bedtime, and slather on a thick hand cream twice a day.

THOSE INGROWN TOENAILS COMING BACK For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • Ingrown toenails look awful and are extremely painful. They can become infected if not treated quickly, but getting the nails out from the skin can be extremely difficult and time consuming. The good news is you can stop most ingrown toenails from ever becoming a problem again, and you don’t need expensive treatments. Here are some tips to start using today.
    CUT YOUR NAILS STRAIGHT ACROSS
Don’t shape your nails with a pair of cutters or scissors. Cut the nail straight across to encourage it to grow straight. If you don’t like the sharp edges of the nail, use a nail file to just take that part away. Avoid over-shaping when using the file.
    USE COTTON WOOL
Soak your toes in Epsom salts to help avoid the bacterial infections that are caused by the ingrown nails. Then take some small pieces of cotton wool and place them between your nail and skin. Use tweezers to keep the cotton wool clean to avoid further infection.
The cotton wool is used as a barrier for between the nail and skin. As your nail stops cutting into your skin, you will find it much easier to shape your nails and avoid the ingrown nails occurring in the future.
    KEEP SOAKING YOUR FEET
Soak your feet on a daily basis. Not only does this help to prevent infection, it will also help to soften the nail. The ingrown problems don’t feel as bad while you’re taking steps to prevent them.
Soaking your feet will also make your feet feel better after a long day at work. It can also help with other foot problems, like hard skin on the heels.
    CHOOSE GOOD SHOES
Your shoes may be the number one culprit. If you try to squeeze your toes into the tips of the shoes, you’re going to make it harder for the nails to grow properly.
This causes ingrown nails and foot infections, as well as making your toes extremely sore. Focus on buying shoes that are comfortable and fit properly. You’ll also avoid bunions if you do this!
    GET REGULAR PEDICURES
If you have it in the budget, get pedicures on a regular basis. If you don’t have the money for a professional, learn how to do them yourself properly.
You will be able to shape the nail properly, while making your toes look great the next time you’re in open-toed shoes or flip flops. Make sure the utensils used on the nails are fully sterilised to prevent the passing of any infections—and that includes fungal infections.
    TRY OVER THE COUNTER OPTIONS
There are a number of over the counter remedies to help with ingrown toenails. If you’re really struggling then consider trying out a few. Start with one and do a trial and error until you find one that works.
If the problems do persist, you will need to consider talking to a doctor. He will be able to give professional advice to stop the nails, but it may mean a complete removal.

NAIL POLISH LAST WITH THESE TIPS For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • When you put nail polish on, how long does it last? There are high chances that it starts chipping within days. You may even find it starts chipping within moments. You need to help the polish last for much longer. The good news is that there are some things you can do. Here are some tips to keep it lasting hours, and even days.
    HAVE CLEAN HANDS
You’re in a rush and just want to put a new coat on. The problem is that dirt and grime on your nails stops the polish from sticking. Even if you think you have clean hands, you may find that there is residue of oils or the nail polish remover from the last colour you wore. Wash your hands right before you apply the polish.
    FILE YOUR NAILS
nail-fileBuffer the top parts of your nails—the bits that the polish sticks to. When your nails are rough, you will find it much easier to keep the polish on. It has something to cling to.
Think about it; when your nails are smooth it is very much like having a smooth surface to try and work on. The paint just slides off, so the same thing happens with the polish.
    GIVE IT TIME
It can take up to 24 hours for nail polish to actually dry! Even if you speed up the process with hand dryers and heating devices like they do in the nail salons, the polish isn’t going to dry all the way through in minutes.
Don’t apply the polish if you’re in a rush. Plan ahead and do it the night before. Then you can worry about your makeup and getting dressed instead.
    STOP TOUCHING IT!
Remember that oil and grime? Well, it’s on your finger tips. If you want to stop it getting into your nail cuticles, you need to stop touching your polish. Grime and oils will get into the cuticles anyway, but you’re helping to speed up the process by constantly feeling your nails.
    STOP BITING TIME
Biting your nails is causing your polish to chip. Think about the odd angles your nails are being bitten off at. That is upsetting the perfection of the polish, and causing parts of it to lift at the top.
Even if you don’t take the nails off with your teeth, you’re upsetting the set of the polish.
    USE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Before applying the polish, use a bit of apple cider vinegar on your nails. Once dry, it works similarly to buffering your nails and helps the polish cling to something.
One of the best things is that it is usually in your cupboard. Even if not, this vinegar is useful for so many things around the home, including as a natural cleaning product!
    KEEP THE APPLICATION THIN
You don’t need a thick layer of polish. Focus on keeping the polish layers thin, so they just cover the real colour of your nails. There is less to catch when you’re doing your daily things, which means there is less there to start chipping!

Beauty Collection’s program starring Revlon For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • Total Beauty Collection has had subscription boxes for sale since May of 2012 when they became so popular in the world of beauty. As with most boxes the items in the boxes were sample sizes. To celebrate a different kind of sampling program they’ve sent several blogs their newest box to share with you. Beauty Info Zone received this new collection and we’re excited to give you the news about it. This goes on sale on April 8, 2013 and is $15 which includes shipping. You don’t have to subscribe either so I shouldn’t have called it a subscription box. Instead I’ll say it’s a collection of beauty products that’s new and unique.

This first box is called the Total Beauty Collection Revlon Edition. Every one of these great products is full size and represents the newest products that Revlon has brought out. It was curated by Revlon’s Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman for spring. There are 4 products plus a booklet with looks from the new Pacific Coast collection by Gucci Westman for Revlon Spring 2013. All the colors are perfect for spring and colors that were prevalent on the runways recently.

There are four full size products in the box including 2 Revlon Lip Butters. I’ve previously reviewed other Lip Butters with raves because they are my favorite lipstick that Revlon has ever put out. The colors are Pink Lemonade and Sorbet. There’s also a beautiful Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow paletteSea Mist, with 4 colors that are gorgeous for spring. In addition there’s aRevlon Colorstay nail polish in a nude shade called Trade Winds. The booklet illustrates four looks using these and a few other Revlon products.

The two Lip Butters, Pink Lemonade and Sorbet, are beautiful and 2 of the 4 newest shades released by Revlon. Pink Lemonade is sweet and light and refreshing, like a glass of fresh pink lemonade would be. It’s very light and may not show up on everyone but it can also be used to top another lipstick to lighten it up without making it look frosty. Sorbet is a fabulous bright pink that has been shown on the gorgeous Emma Stone in advertisements. It’s a very cool tone that can be tempered with Pink Lemonade if it were to be too cool or too bright for you. I personally love wearing them together. Revlon Lip Butters are sheer and moisturizing on my lips.

Sea Mist Colorstay eyeshadow palette has 4 great shades that remind me of the ocean. The shades are Emerald, Teal, Peach, and Aubergine. All 4 of these shades have a satin finish which is my favorite. Emerald is my favorite shade in this quad since I’m loving all greens lately. The way I like to wear it is Emerald on the lid, Teal in the outer crease about halfway across and Peach on the browbone. Peach is very light and didn’t show up well in my swatches but it’s a beautiful shade on my eyes and has a great subtlety to hold the look together. Aubergine looks darker than it actually is on the eye. I liked it as an eyeliner with the other shades in this palette (I use Trish McEvoy’s Finish Line to give it more depth and staying power).

This is a fun new way for Total Beauty to do a subscription box. By sticking with one brand and including only full size products you are getting the newest from the brand with items you can actually use. Hurray to Revlon and Gucci Westman for putting together such beautiful colors and looks in the first collaboration, Total Beauty Collection Revlon Edition. The box can be purchased on the Total Beauty Collection website starting today, April 8th. — Marcia

  • Iqra Naveed
  • Nailette is the newest nail subscription on the market. It’s only two months old so it’s a baby in the world of subscriptions but that’s so fitting since the polishes you will get with your subscription are sort of like babies too. They are minis from companies like Essie, OPI, and Orly.

Read this poem by the founder of Nailettes and you’ll see why I was happy when she offered to send me a box.
    Nailette subscription box

‘Twas the first day of spring, when all through the sky,
Not a cloud was present, or none I could spy.
When out at brunch I saw a friend’s nails,
In a stunning coral that matched her coattails.
Away to the beauty store I flew like a flash,
And found 30 shades of coral – a total mishmash!
Finally, I gave up and just asked an employee,
What the bestselling coral shade might be.
With a fat little brush, so lively and quick,
I applied my new polish and hoped it would stick.
Alas, alas – the shade was too red,
And my savings account, 15 dollars it’d shed.
I decided something must be done,
Wasting all this polish was no fun.
Could someone help me find the right shade?
In a size I can finish before I’m an old maid?
And then, in a twinkling, I founded Nailette,
A mix of nails and a game of roulette.
Mini nail polishes mailed to your door,
In handpicked colors that you will adore.
Nailette’s aim is to find colors you want yet don’t want to be overloaded with. Sometimes you want a bold, bright shade for your toes but you know it’s a one or two time polish. With Nailettes you can change your subscription to fit the mood of the moment.

For $7.99 (plus $2 shipping) you’ll get the cutest little box with two well wrapped minis in it. You start by specifying your skin tone and then choose what type of colors you want: Simple and Subtle; Sophisticated and Classy; Bold and Edgy; or I want to mix it up.  There are sample nails of the types of shades they are talking about on their subscription page

With my package I wanted Bold and Edgy. Here are the two great polishes I received:

I love holographic polishes and I’d mulled over OPI’s Peace, Love & OPI every time I was in Ulta but I had similar colors and didn’t feel like buying it to use once. I was thrilled when this came in my package. Orly Frisky is a cream polish that is more suited for spring and summer so I haven’t worn it yet but I will since I love my nails to look frisky in sunny weather

The OPI polish was so much fun to wear because it always looked different. The above picture was my nails under my nail tech’s bright light. The bottom was taken within the shop. Look how different they are.

Each month you need to be signed up by the 20th of the month to change your options. You can order a set of three polishes for $13.79 shipped too. This makes a great gift for someone you know who loves polish and loves to wear different colors all the time (like me!!!) You can purchase a 3 or 6 month gift for someone.
With Nailette you get surprises every month but you’ll never have to worry about the quality of the polishes since you know and love those brands anyway. I love subscription boxes and surprises so this is a great find for me. If you are a polish maven it’s time to get to know Nailettetoo. — Marcia

face can be Heaven masks a giveaway For Beauty Info Korner

  • Iqra Naveed
  • Hearing the name 7TH HEAVEN made me wonder what kind of masks these were. When they arrived from the company I instantly recognized the packaging as I expect you will too. Montagne Jeunesse asked their fans to rename their company. It’s not that I haven’t bought their masks in the past, it’s that I couldn’t pronounce it or spell it. Happily I can pronounce and spell 7th Heaven and found that it’s the name that changed, not these great masks.
“30 years ago we began mixing natural vegetarian treats in our vegetarian kitchen.
We needed a name – something that summed up our fun loving attitude & natural herbal roots…
Something to let the world know what kind of caring people we are – it had to be catchy and roll-off-the-tongue…
    Unfortunately all the cool laid-back names were already taken… ;
We finally agreed on Montagne Jeunesse, French for Mountain Youth
Hands (paws) up all those clever-clogs who can pronounce it?
We get it! Everyone instantly knows our iconic face but no one can say our name.
So, we asked our fans, ‘help us rename the baby’
    And 7th Heaven was discovered!”

I have two of these masks and soon two of you will have them also. Tea Tree Peel-Off mask was created to “D-Stress”. Argan Oil Mud was created to deeply cleanse. The 7th Heaven masks are all priced at $1.99 and can be found in Walmart stores (I couldn’t find them online).
I couldn’t wait to use the Tea Tree Peel-Off Mask. It sounded like fun and it actually was. You apply this all over your face and down your neck. It’s green and sticky but quickly becomes like a second skin as it dries. Then relax or go about your business because this mask is going nowhere.

Peeling it off is great fun because you can get most of it off all at once. Start at your chin and pull outwards.

I gathered my bits and pieces to show you the aftermath. When I looked closely at the mask I could see my dead skin had been removed. It was a satisfying feeling.

While this is recommended for all skin types I think it’s best for combination and normal skin.  The main ingredients are pressed Tea Tree leaves, crushed Witch Hazel and Pressed Willowherb

Argan Oil Mask is recommended for Combination and Oily Skin. My skin is combination and dry but it didn’t seem to care at all what the package said.

7th Heaven Argan Oil Mud Mask is a once a week mask with terrific ingredients. It contains Moroccan Argan Oil and rich Acai Berries (a great antioxidant). This mask really cleans your pores well. While it’s not as cute to look at once on, it’s great when you remove it and feel how great your skin is.

The mask comes out as a beige but dries into a calamine lotion pink. It sets but it doesn’t harden so you can still talk if you want (unlike the Tea Tree Peel Off which didn’t allow me to talk). There’s a fruity fragrance to this but when you wash it off after you won’t notice it. It washes off without a problem when I use a washcloth.
